Eloping is a wonderful adventure, so it makes perfect sense to elope in one of the world’s most adventurous countries: Norway! From breathtaking fjords to dramatic mountain peaks, adventure and fun await around every corner of your Norwegian elopement.
Whether you want to hike ice-covered hills, watch the sunrise over the fjords, or relax with a glass of wine in a mountaintop restaurant, Norway can suit everyone’s idea of a romantic adventure.
If you’re thinking about how to elope in Norway, it helps to know a few tips – especially if you’re new to our welcoming and beautiful country. To help you have the most magical time, I am delighted to help. Here are my top Norwegian elopement tips for couples.
One of my top Norwegian elopement tips is to plan your elopement on a weekday. Norway is very popular with tourists from all over the world, especially in the summer months. This means venues and hotels can reach capacity and popular tourism destinations might be busy.
You’ll treasure your elopement more if you’re surrounded by serenity and privacy, which is why I would recommend midweek dates. It also helps to plan and book everything as far in advance as you can, as I wouldn’t want you to miss out on a hotel or restaurant that you have your heart set on.
Having an experienced local photographer with you can make the world of difference! I am so passionate about our majestic country and I can recommend plenty of hidden gems, hotels and experiences that are hard to find otherwise.
I am more than just your photographer too, as I am here to help you plan all the wonderful details of your trip, with bespoke Norway elopement packages to perfectly suit your interests.
Dreaming of a fjord elopement in Norway, for example? What a beautiful way to celebrate your love! From working out the best time of day for photos to recommending a nearby venue to toast your marriage, I am happy to help.
In all of the excitement of planning your adventurous Norway elopement, don’t forget to spend some time thinking about what’s important to you as a couple.
Do you long to say your vows on a stunning mountaintop? (A top tip: if you’re drawn to the rugged beauty of the mountains, consider western Norway.) Or do you want to enjoy the beauty of the fjords? Maybe delight in fine dining in some of Norway’s best restaurants?
Be sure you know your priorities so you can plan your elopement to be meaningful and special – and fun, of course!
There’s a common misconception about Norway – that it’s cold all the time! Here in Norway, we actually have the four traditional seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Each brings different landscapes, lighting and temperature, and all are gorgeous in their own way.
A summer wedding, holding hands as you walk through wildflowers, will feel very different than a winter wonderland elopement where you delight in the snowfall. Both are wonderful, but think about which season best suits you and plan accordingly.
When planning your Norwegian elopement, no need to make things complicated! Your wedding will be a beautiful and exciting celebration of love, so it’s OK to keep things simple and easy.
One great thing is that there are no rules and you can plan everything your own way! However, I am very happy to recommend some fun elopement ideas in Norway to help inspire you.
If you’re new to visiting Norway, it helps to know that the best way to get around is with a car. You can rent cars at the airport, but I am also glad to help with planning your journey.
I know the roads of Norway very well and can give inside tips on the most scenic routes to travel while you make your way to the beautiful Sognefjord!
In Norway, part of the fun is the unexpected. The weather changes frequently, giving you sunshine, storms or fog all in one day. It helps to be prepared with sturdy hiking shoes and waterproof gear, just in case the weather turns.
Even in rainy or overcast weather, we can still take amazing elopement photos – sometimes moody fog is actually better for photographers than bright, sunny days.
It helps to be prepared for anything, but the most important thing to bring is the right mindset!
While summers are generally warm, the days can still be cool in the evenings. And if you want to visit outside of the summer months of June–August, expect chillier weather and bring some woollen underwear and warm layers, especially if you want to go hiking.
The cold is all part of the fun, though – and there’s always a welcoming log fireplace nearby to help warm you up! We Norwegians love being outdoors and exploring our country all year round, whether we’re hiking, skiing or sledding, so even on cold days, there’s still plenty of excitement to be found.
Non-Norwegians are legally able to get married in Norway, which makes it such an appealing place for a destination elopement. There’s a bit of paperwork required, as marriage licenses are overseen by The Norwegian Tax Administration.
I am glad to help you through this process to make it as simple as possible. If you have any questions or worries about how to plan an elopement wedding in Norway, I am here to help. I can’t wait to hear your ideas, so get in touch and let’s start dreaming together! Your epic Norwegian elopement awaits.
